Our own crane is a Kato 13 tonne City Crane, and for the bigger jobs we regularly bring in cranes of up to 130 tonnes. That is how we take out trees too dangerous to remove with traditional roping, lift a fallen tree off a structure whatever its size or position, and reach into a back yard from the street instead of dragging bulky gear through the side gate. A&A Arbor Tree Service has been part of the tree industry for over 30 years, working out of Thornleigh across northern Sydney.

Glen and Paul Dwyer have owned the business since 2002 and share more than fifty years of experience between them. Glen is an AQF Level 5 arborist, sits on the Executive Committee of the Tree Contractors Association of Australia, and trained in London. Paul is an AQF Level 3 arborist and our Senior Site Manager, and quality control is his responsibility. Their father Bob handles occupational health and safety, bringing thirty years in the defence industry to how equipment gets handled on our sites. Our crew hold Certificate III in Arboriculture along with high voltage training, machinery operations, crane licences, aerial rescue training, EWP licences, senior first aid and traffic control.

Tree removal is not automatically where we start. We would rather look at every possibility first and tell you honestly whether the tree has to come out, because we understand the relationship a tree has with what is around it. Where a tree can stay, tree maintenance and pruning keep it safe and in shape, and stump grinding follows a removal so you are not left working around what is still in the ground.

Using a crane for pruning and removal usually brings the price down rather than up. The job is quicker, fewer hours are spent on site, bulky equipment can be placed where it would otherwise never fit, and several trees can come out in a single visit.

Severe weather events hit Sydney every year and trees and branches come down with them, though heavy wind and rain are not the only causes. Heat-related stress, saturated soils and loose ground, cavities or split branch unions, and trees that were incorrectly lopped years ago all put a tree at risk. After the March 2020 storms a customer at Wahroonga had a huge Leyland cypress lying across twenty metres of the back of the block and a split Turpentine at the front. Glen arrived with the crane, a soft-tyred bobcat that left no mark on the turf, a chipper and about ten men, and the crew raked the whole quarter acre of lawn before they left.
