About This Business

Since 2000 we have been looking after the trees and palms of Fremantle and the suburbs around it, and Ace's Tree & Garden Service is still an owner operated firm working out of East Fremantle. We are fully insured, we hold an unblemished safety record in Western Australian tree services, and a fully qualified arborist attends every tree we are called to. We would rather be known as arborists than as tree loppers, and there is a reason for that.

Lopping and topping a tree to bring its height down was accepted practice once. It is not any more, because it tends to produce the opposite of what the owner wanted: regrowth comes back at the weakened points on the trunk and you end up with a larger and more dangerous tree than you started with. The crown matters enormously to a tree's structure, and a tree monitors the ratio between its growth zones and the load bearing capacity of its major branches all by itself. Pruning done properly respects that ratio and brings the height down in the least stressful way available, which is the whole of the difference between our work and a cheap cut.

The practical range runs from crown maintenance, meaning deadwooding, crown thinning, selective and formative pruning and a clean of the crown, through to crown modification: reduction, crown lifting, pollarding, remedial work and line clearance. Thinning lets light and air move through the foliage, takes weight off the heavy limbs and holds the tree's natural shape; raising lifts the lower branches clear of a roof, a driveway or a footpath. Tree removal stays a last resort and we will tell you when a tree can be saved, but a dead, dying or irreparably hazardous tree, one crowding and harming its neighbours, or one standing where a build has to go, does have to come out, and stump grinding at any size follows so nothing regrows and the roots stop lifting paths and pipes. On palms we take off the old fronds and the fruit clusters, which are weakly attached, messy when they drop and a nesting spot for rats, while leaving the healthy fronds alone so the palm is not put under stress. If your gutters keep filling with gum leaves, which is a live problem in a bushfire prone street, the overhanging trees are usually the cause and we can deal with them at the same visit.

Our quote is a fair one and it will not always be the cheapest. An incorrectly pruned tree is usually back needing work inside 12 months, while a mature tree pruned to Australian Standard AS 4373 we would not expect to see again for three to five years, and that is where the value for money actually sits. We also publish our arboriculture policy and procedures manual on our website, so you can read how we work before you book us. Ring 0401 336 699 or send your details through the contact form and we will come out, look at the tree and tell you plainly what it needs.
