A Hitachi ZX40U gets in where a full size machine has no chance. It's compact, with a short rear end and a four cylinder engine with ample displacement behind it, which is what makes it work in confined spaces, and we run it on our own jobs and hire it out. Beside it sit a commercial Vermeer chipper and a cherry picker. All Tree Solutions TAS is Troy Wighton's business, out of East Devonport and 18 years into it.

Trees planted too close to one another, or too close to a house, a shed or a boundary, are the hard ones. Confined space tree removal means dismantling a tree in pieces when there's nowhere to put them, and the crew and the machinery are set up for exactly that. Branch material goes through the Vermeer on site with skilled operators running it, and none of it heads for landfill. We turn the chip into mulch and organise prompt delivery, and once it's down on a garden it holds moisture in, moderates the soil temperature, keeps weeds under control and loosens compacted ground.

Our pruning and shaping is the work that keeps a tree worth having, whether that's bringing a canopy back off a roof, restoring one that's been butchered by somebody else, or getting the structure right on a young tree while it's still easy to influence. Fruit tree maintenance is its own job again, pruned for the crop it has to carry, and hedge maintenance keeps a boundary hedge dense and even the whole way down.

The health side gets its own attention. Where a tree is worth feeding, fertilising costs a good deal less than replacing it.
