The week gets reordered around a storm, and that is the point of us. Our staff are fully qualified or partway through their arboricultural training, which has core competencies in first aid and OH and S as well as in depth training on tree work safety. On site every one of them is in chainsaw protective trousers, a helmet, ear muffs, safety glasses, protective boots and high visibility clothing, and Donny runs it that way because the alternative does not bear thinking about.

The machine we are proudest of is the stump grinder, which is the narrowest access model available and articulated, so it gets down the side of a house and into the corners of a backyard that other grinders simply cannot reach. That decides which jobs we can take, and it is the reason people ring us about a stump somebody else has already looked at and walked away from. Alongside it we run Stihl power tools and our own wood chipper.

The rest of the work is what you would expect and we do all of it: tree removal and lopping for the ones that have outgrown their spot or turned into a hazard, tree pruning for the ones that only need weight taken off and a sensible shape put back, palm cleaning and removal, hedging and powerline clearance. Strata managers, builders and business sites get the same crew and the same terms under our commercial service.

We work both north and south of the river, and the northern suburbs are a regular run: the Cities of Perth, Stirling, Joondalup, Wanneroo, Swan, Bayswater, Belmont, Subiaco and Vincent, along with the Towns of Cambridge and Bassendean and the Shire of Mundaring. Everything that comes down gets chipped and carted so you get the yard back tidy, and the wood chipping turns into garden mulch; one customer watched an entire banksia go through the mulcher and come back out as something for the garden beds.
