In 2005 I finished a Certificate III in Arboriculture at Capel Manor College in North London, and the first climbing work I did after that was on the Royal Gardens and conservation sites of Central London. Arboriculture had already been part of my life since I was 17, when the outdoor work and the team environment pulled me in. I learned early on from experienced climbers, and what stuck was the habit of doing tree work properly. There was a stretch in Brisbane after that, and the last ten years have been here in Perth, across technical removals, large eucalyptus trees, council street tree maintenance and commercial and residential pruning. That is more than twenty years of it now, and Arbor Culture Tree Management is where it has all landed.

What I care about is the health, form, safety and future of a tree, so we do not over-cut one for a quick visual fix. Our tree surgery, pruning and maintenance takes in maintenance pruning, crown reduction, crown thinning, deadwooding, structural support and tree health assessment on residential, strata and commercial sites, and it follows recognised arboricultural best practice and the Australian Standard for pruning, AS4373-2007. The goal underneath all of it is a healthier tree canopy across Perth, which means working with councils, businesses and homeowners on tree retention and on the long term health of what is already in the ground.

The jobs that stay with you are the awkward ones. A courtyard tree that needed a heavy prune with barely any room to work in. Five Lilly Pillys and a run of the neighbour's overhanging branches on the one property. Three big gums in a front garden, with the limbs over the roof taken off and the rest pruned so the trees kept their structure. Work like that comes up north and south of the river, through the western suburbs, out in the Perth Hills and across the wider metro, so we get to Subiaco, Nedlands, Dalkeith, Peppermint Grove, Claremont, Cottesloe, Stirling, Osborne Park, Mount Lawley, Leederville, Wembley, Scarborough, North Beach, Trigg, Carine, Floreat, Fremantle, Applecross, Bicton and Hamilton Hill.

When a tree genuinely has to go, tree dismantling and tree felling are done with section cutting, so it comes down in controlled pieces and disturbs as little as possible of what is standing around it, and the stump grinding is done on site while we are there.

For hedge management we cut, trim and maintain hedges across Perth so they hold a smooth line and keep growing healthy, with height and width reduction, rejuvenation and scheduled maintenance visits where you want them. Palms want somebody who knows them, so our palm tree maintenance and removal covers fronds, seedpods, trunk cleaning and full removals. Everything suitable gets mulched on site, and you are welcome to keep the mulch, or the logs for firewood.

Every job starts with the species, the condition, the access, the structures around it and the risk level, all worked out before anyone starts cutting.
