Ask who is signing your tree report before you ask what it costs. Our consulting arborists are Level 5 and hold the International Society of Arboriculture's Tree Risk Assessment Qualification, and TRAQ is considered best practice for assessing the risk a tree carries. That is what stands behind the tree reports we produce, whether it is a tree risk assessment, a local government planning application or a tree health diagnostic, and it is what we put our name to at Arborzone Total Tree Care.

We are 3rd generation South Gippslanders, working throughout South Gippsland and the Bass Coast and beyond, with Peter Bateman answering the phone. The experience and accreditation runs across both the public and private sectors, which is how we come to be working with Parks Victoria on their eucalypt forest restoration project at Wilsons Promontory National Park.

Where the assets around a tree rule out a straight fell, we dismantle it. Bringing a tree down by felling can be the quickest route, though rarely the simplest, and poor technique combined with inadequate training is behind a number of serious injuries in this trade. When we dismantle a tree, specialised equipment and superior lowering techniques give us pin-point accuracy, corralling the debris away from anything valuable and into a processing zone where the tree can be turned into mulch, usable timber or firewood. It is the same thinking that keeps climbing spikes off our pruning jobs: spikes damage a tree, so their use belongs on removals only.

Pruning takes a thorough knowledge of tree biology and biomechanics, plus an eye for sculptural aesthetics, and specialised climbing equipment lets our qualified arborists reach any area inside a canopy. Our tree pruning goes to correcting structural faults and defects, reducing the likelihood of a limb or a whole tree failing, and improving the form and amenity value of what is left. You will not hear topping, lopping or shaping offered here. Topping is not an accepted industry practice, and the other two are not words an arborist uses about a tree. The standard we work to is AS 4373-2007.

Trees have a finite life, and taking one out is a necessary part of succession and renewal, so when a tree is in poor health, structurally unsafe or simply planted in the wrong place, our arborists will talk you through the right time for the tree removal. Afterwards the mulch is yours to keep and put back into the garden soil, timber sections can be cut into firewood, and the larger sections we can mill into one-off furniture. We also handle Elm Leaf Beetle treatment, milling, tree disease identification and treatment and consultancy, and we leave the work site clean, safe and undamaged.
