The forestry mulcher is a Bobcat skid steer with a mulching attachment on the front, and the cab spec tells you what the work is like: shatterproof windows, a full Falling Object Protection System, sealed engine and exhaust compartments, air conditioned, sound deadened and pressurised, with a fire extinguisher and a seat belt inside. What matters about mulching is what happens to the ground afterwards. We take the unwanted vegetation out without leaving the soil bare, cutting it back into the ground so it feeds the soil and holds it in place through the next big wind or downpour. That is how we put in fire breaks, cut tracks and easements, handle BAL clearing, and reclaim land that fast growing vegetation has taken over. The machine makes short work of small trees and brush, and the site is left in a state you can do something with.

Ours is a family business, more than nine years old, with over 50 years of vegetation management experience across the team. Kyle Batt came into the industry in 2002 and manages the fleet, and his background in truck and machinery maintenance is the reason the gear is ready when a crew rolls onto site. Joel Batt heads up Melbourne operations and the SHEQ team that runs safety, health and environmental compliance. We hold AS/NZS 4801:2001 for occupational health and safety, ISO 14001:2015 for environmental management and ISO 9001:2015 for quality management, which is what lets us take utility, council and government contracts alongside a suburban backyard.

Behind the mulching sits the ordinary tree work.
