About This Business

A tree hanging over your fence is one of the few garden problems that arrives with a legal question attached. Where it grew on the boundary with no clear side to it, the tree can be jointly owned and both owners have to agree before anything is cut; where it is a significant or regulated tree encroaching on your property, pruning it back generally doesn't need council approval unless the work would affect the tree's health or natural appearance. Ring us and we'll help you work out which of those you're in. Blackwood Tree Service has been attending trees around Blackwood since 1983, across the 5050, 5051, 5052, 5062 and 5159 postcodes: Bellevue Heights, Eden Hills, Craigburn Farm, Coromandel Valley, Hawthorndene, Belair, Glenalta, Aberfoyle Park, Chandlers Hill, Flagstaff Hill, Happy Valley, Brown Hill Creek, Hawthorn, Mitcham, Springfield and Torrens Park. Odds are we're in your street or passing through it in any given week of the year.

The keys were handed over to our Managing Director, Keir Hietanen, and with that the business became a second generation Blackwood family operation working from a new base in the village. Keir came up through this company over more than a decade, from learning the ropes to Head Climber to Team Leader, and the crew is made up of local staff. The work still comes largely by word of mouth around here, we're fully insured, and everything we cut is done to Australian Standard AS 4373-2007.

No job is too small and no tree too tall, and the ones with nowhere to drop are what we're known for. Confined space removals, high risk contracts, storm-damaged and fallen trees, dangerous or overhanging limbs, sick and diseased trees: where the access is poor we bring specialist access equipment in rather than force the job through. The waste goes through our own chipping machine on site and leaves as mulch, or we leave it with you to spread on the garden where the logistics allow. Either way there's a clean-up after every job and the surrounding garden takes minimal impact.

Weak or dead limbs are a hazard to people, wires, buildings and the vegetation around them, and taking them out on a schedule is a proactive approach to safety. Maintenance pruning, crown thinning, crown reduction, selective pruning, deadwooding, limb inspections and service line clearing all sit under that heading, and we'll do it as routine or seasonal maintenance on your property. Gum trees are the reason deadwooding exists as a job, because they hold dead limbs that are genuinely hazardous to a house, a shed, a pet or whoever happens to be standing underneath. We also give bushfire protection advice and help you create a buffer zone between the vegetation and the house.

Left in the ground, a stump attracts termites, cockroaches and ants, invites fungi that can reach your garden beds and the trees near them, and throws epicormic regrowth that is poorly attached and prone to failure. Our specialised stump team grinds it to a pulp that goes back into the hole as a soil base, and stump poisoning is the cost effective way to stop the regrowth if you'd sooner keep the stump as a garden feature. On the commercial side we take council and government contracts, golf courses, schools, site clearance and block clearing for new builds and subdivisions, and the crew can break into two or more teams when the scope calls for it.

Stumps we can sometimes estimate over the phone. Everything else we come and look at first, so ring the office for a quote, or just for a hand deciding whether the tree in question is even yours to prune.
