Bradley Kingston has more than 13 years of hands-on experience in arboriculture and has spent the last five of them running BSK Tree Services out of Warragul. He holds a Certificate III in Arboriculture and a Diploma of Arboriculture, and on site you will find him climbing, operating the elevated work platform, or setting up the rigging on a removal that has to be taken apart carefully. Ray runs the loaders and machinery, feeds the chippers, handles the stump grinding and keeps the site clean from start to finish. Two more of the team are working through their Diploma and another two their Certificate III.

Full time climbing arborists are a rare find in this industry, and having them on the crew is what makes a confined space job possible. Where a tree cannot be dropped it has to be dismantled and rigged down piece by piece, and all of our rigging is rated to Australian Standards, which counts for most when the work sits next to powerlines or over an asset that is not yours. For the tall ones we run cherry pickers from 20 metres up to 50 metres, so a climber only goes where a climber is genuinely needed. That range covers a small pruning job or some hedge maintenance just as readily as a large scale tree removal.

Emergencies do not keep office hours, so we are open Monday to Sunday, 24 hours, public holidays included. Night work is a discipline of its own. If a tree has started to uproot and cannot safely be taken down in the dark, we guide wire it and light the site with mobile lighting so it holds until morning, then come back the next day to assess it properly and remove it if that is what it needs. The rest of the time we are doing tree maintenance: pruning to extend a tree's life, weight reduction and crown thinning before a tree turns fragile or dangerous.

What comes off a job runs through woodchippers from 12 inches to 18 inches, with excavators and loaders behind them on the commercial and large scale work. The mulch that comes out is yours to keep if you want it, or we take it away, because eliminating waste where we can is how we would sooner work. Alongside the cutting we do arboricultural consulting and report writing, including arboricultural impact assessments, hazard and risk assessments, tree management plans, and written recommendations on retention, pruning or removal for council applications and development requirements.
