Canopy Couple

Briar climbs and Francis works the ground, and between them that is the whole of Canopy Couple: a team of two based in Derby and working across the Kimberley, owned and run by partners Briar Waugh and Francis Delaude. Briar came over from New Zealand, has a good eye for detail and keeps up with whatever is new in the industry. Francis grew up in France and worked as a machinist before he came to trees, so the felling and the ground based rigging are his. Every cut either of us makes follows AS 4373-2007, the Australian Standard for pruning amenity trees, and arguing the case for correct pruning around here is a fair part of why we started.

Between us we are qualified arborists with three years in arboriculture, fully insured with both public liability and accident cover. We have been trained in tree identification, tree health and risk assessment as well as pruning, which means we can tell you what is actually wrong with a tree before anyone reaches for a saw. Our climbing and rigging equipment is bought specifically for this industry, and it gets checked and maintained at the end of every day it is used.

Tree pruning is where the standard earns its keep. Bringing an oversized tree back inside the space it has is canopy reduction. Thinning lets light and wind move through a canopy instead of the whole thing catching like a sail, a canopy lift gets the low limbs off your roof, your driveway or the heads of people walking under it, and regular canopy maintenance keeps a tree from ever reaching the point where drastic work is the only option left.

Some trees are past helping. We take out hazardous and dead trees before they come down on their own, handle palm cleaning and removals, and deal with pest tree removal and control where a species has got away in a yard or along a fence line. The green waste leaves with us, so you are not left with a pile to burn or cart off yourself.

Every job runs the same way. We come and assess the tree properly first, do the work with the gear the job calls for, then clear the waste and leave the site clean. Customers around Derby and the wider Kimberley get the same two people from the first look at the tree through to the last of the waste going on the truck, and both of us are qualified to be there.
