In 1986 our founders, Bruno Wright and Phil Griffiths, took a chance and bought ACT Tree Felling and Skyline Tree Surgery on the South Coast. They had already worked in both businesses, so they knew exactly what they wanted to build, and 38 years on Canopy Tree Experts is still locally owned, still Canberra based, and Bruno is still our Managing Director. He puts the change in the trade plainly: "When I started in this industry, we had no education, no safety harnesses, no chippers, and no protective equipment." He was also one of the first arborists in Australia to study under the tree biologist Dr Alex Shigo in the United States, and he brought that biology home to Canberra when almost nobody here was talking about it.

That investment in education has never stopped. We are members of ISA Australia, our arborists are ISA certified, we are EVO accredited and fully compliant with local regulations, and we carry public liability and workers compensation insurance. Four of our consultants hold a Diploma of Arboriculture, and our field crews who climb the trees and run the gear are trained to the same standard, which is what lets us say we are the most qualified arborist company in Canberra.

On the tools we handle tree removals and tree pruning across the capital, and we finish with stump grinding so the ground can be used again. Powerline clearing is work we are specifically accredited for, and it is not something a general suburban crew can lawfully touch. We also put trees in and move them: tree planting gets the right species into the right spot, and with large tree transplanting we can relocate a mature tree that stands in the way of a build rather than lose it.

Our consulting side gives you something a regulator or an insurer will accept. Tree risk assessment tells you how likely a tree is to fail and what to do about it, root mapping shows what is happening under a slab or a driveway before you dig, and tree health advice gets to why a tree is struggling. Where a development is involved we write tree management plans for tree protection, and we handle tree removal permits, which matter a great deal in the ACT where what you may touch is controlled.

Sick trees get a proper diagnosis before anyone reaches for a saw, and we run elm leaf beetle treatment as its own service for Canberra's elms. When the weather turns, our storm damaged tree work is backed by a 24/7 emergency response line, so a tree across a driveway at two in the morning gets answered.
