About This Business

Pruning the trees in and around the roller coasters at Warner Bros Movie World, and in the koala and kangaroo feeding zones at Paradise Country, is work that has to be finished without a theme park ever noticing it happened. City Tree Services has done both. We also cleared the palms at the Ampol depot in the Port of Brisbane, where debris was dropping from height onto a high traffic pedestrian entrance, and handled the storm damage and restoration pruning across the Australian Catholic University's Brisbane campus. Hutchinson Builders, Frasers Property Australia, Green Life Group and the Hope Island Resort body corporate are all on that same list.

Founder Tony Jansen launched the business in 1997, after spending the late 1980s on golf courses as a greenkeeper, working outdoors and wondering the whole time how he could make a living among the trees themselves. He picked Brisbane as the place to bring up his sons, and it was not long before all three of them had joined him. Two generations of arborists work here now, Tony still does the consulting and supervises the crews himself, and from our base at Sherwood the work runs right through Brisbane, down to the Gold Coast and up onto the Sunshine Coast where a client has sites spread across the south east.

Tony is the Head Trainer for Arboriculture at CTC College Queensland, delivering the Certificate III trade qualification, and he trains Brisbane City Council's own arborists and their parks and gardens staff. Behind that sit a Diploma of Applied Science in Arboriculture, a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, a Certificate III in Arboriculture and a Certificate III in Civil Construction Plant Operations, along with international TRAQ risk assessment, pruning to AS4373 and tree protection to AS4970. We carry WorkCover, twenty million dollars of public liability and ten million of indemnity cover, and we sit on the Queensland Arboricultural Association's approved contractors register.

What the gear can reach decides how a job gets done. All access elevated work platforms put us in a canopy without anyone having to climb it, battery powered equipment keeps the noise down inside a closed community or a school, a tracked remote control stump grinder crosses a lawn and fits down the side of a house, and cranes from 20 to 110 tonnes come in when a tree has to leave over a roof. Our lead climber works to world standard technique on everything a machine cannot get to. Tree removal, tree pruning, tree lopping and stump grinding and removal all come off that same set of machines and hands.

Not everything ends with a saw. Arborist reports, tree consulting and tree management plans go to schools, retirement villages, aged care facilities, builders, developers, body corporates and local government, whether that is one tree assessed before a build starts, a Vegetation Protection Order to sort out with the council, or a plan covering every tree on a site. Come summer, storm and emergency responses take over, and the cheaper version of that is having the canopy trimmed back in the cooler months before the season arrives. Quotes are free and carry no obligation, though we do need to come and look at the tree to make one accurate, and we are open seven days a week including public holidays.
