Some of the trees we take down come back as furniture. CPD Tree Services mills its own timber slabs out of Perth's urban forest, with more than 30 species to choose from and a WoodWizz surfacing machine to finish them, so a tree that has to go can end up as a table. Michael and Sandra Byrne have been running the business out of Midland since 1993, and Michael has been a climbing arborist for more than 30 years.

Michael holds a Diploma in Arboriculture at AQF Level 5, a Cert IV in Training and Assessment, and is both a VALID and a TRAQ tree risk assessor. He has been an ArbWest member for 20 years and spent six of them as a director of the WA Tree Climbing Championships, and the business is accredited with the Arboriculture Association of WA and Arboriculture Australia. That is the background behind our arborist consulting: tree surveys, preliminary arboricultural reports, tree health and condition reports, tree risk assessments, and verbal reports for when you only need someone qualified to look at it and tell you straight.

On the tools we climb on rope and harness, so we can get up into a canopy without running a machine across your garden. Tree pruning is done to AS4373, the Australian Standard for pruning amenity trees, and we also take on tree removal, palm pruning and removal, powerline clearance, fall arrest cable installation for limbs worth holding on to, and APZ management where a property needs its asset protection zone kept clear. Where a tree sits tight against a house or leans over a shed, we section it down on ropes and lower each piece out by hand.

We are fully insured and police cleared, and our staff stay on an ongoing training program. The greener end of the work matters to us as well, so we do pest and disease treatments, habitat box installation for the birds and possums that lose a hollow when a tree comes out, and seed collection. Green waste goes through the chipper. We sell mulch and hand out free green wood to anyone who burns it.

Our patch is the Perth Hills and the Eastern Hills, worked out of Midland. We take on domestic and commercial work right through the hills, from one tree in a back yard to a survey across a whole site.
