One week it is a repeat aphid infestation on a silver birch, the next a drive out to Nyngan to put eyes on a tree, or an assessment of a cypress big enough to be worth writing about. That is the shape of the work at Douglas Arbor, an arboricultural consultancy and tree care business based in the Central West of New South Wales. Mark Douglas is the principal arborist, and the decade behind him covers both local government and private practice, principally in Orange, Sydney and Canberra.

The work usually begins with meeting you at the property and looking at the tree itself. A tree assessment consultation covers its health, any pests or diseases at work on it, the hazards it might present, what it means for a development site, and how it should be managed from here. Where an insect or a pathogen is doing the damage, you get specific management recommendations aimed at stopping it going further, and where local legislation bears on what you can do with the tree, we will tell you that before you commit to a design.

On a project, the paperwork has to hold up. Our arborist reports cover consultation, reporting and certification right through the planning and development of a job, including tree removal applications, pre development assessments, impact and risk assessments, and tree management plans. The tree side of an application is covered start to finish, from the first assessment through to the certification at the end.

The other half of the practice puts things back rather than taking them away. We supply and install nest boxes, and where a tree suits it we can create habitat hollows in it to support local wildlife. Tree planting and care covers species selection and planting specifications, and we will do the planting for you as well. For the elms, our Elm Leaf Beetle control gets a tree back on top of the pest that is stripping it.
