Clearing an SEC easement is not a job you improvise. There is a corridor that has to be kept clear, conductors overhead that are not going to move, and a machine underneath you that has to put a person exactly where the cut needs to happen and hold them there. The timber goes back a long way in this family. Darren Hickman's grandfather was logging around the district in the mid 1930s, and the environmental arborists working here now have more than thirty years in tree maintenance between them, which makes this the longest established tree service in central Victoria. We run out of California Gully in Bendigo and work a wide area from there: Maryborough, Castlemaine, Echuca, Shepparton, Heathcote, Clunes and Talbot, and the rest of Central Victoria. The OH&S standards are met on both halves of what we do, the tree work and the hire.

Five travel towers is what makes the difference on the ground. The biggest carries a twenty four metre boom height, and below it sit nineteen, seventeen and fifteen metre machines, one with a telescopic flyboom for getting in over an obstacle, plus a thirteen metre telescopic boom for the tighter sites. Having that range means the machine is matched to the tree and the access, so we are not turning up with too much boom for a suburban backyard or too little for a river red gum.

Around the towers, the tree work covers tree pruning and maintenance, tree removal, and stump grinding and removal to finish a site. Where a machine will not reach, rope and harness climbing gets an arborist into the canopy the old way. We also take on tree surgery and tree consultancy for the trees worth arguing over, and palm tree transplanting for the ones that can be moved rather than lost. Everything that goes through the chipper comes back out as mulch for sale.
