About This Business

Our founder trained a long way from Rose Bay. Jonathan Cox took his National Certificate in Arboriculture at Moulton Agricultural College in Northamptonshire in 1998, a qualification that sits at Level 4 in the Australian system, and worked on the trees at Kew Gardens and Buckingham Palace before bringing twenty years as a qualified tree surgeon out to Sydney. Alongside the arboriculture certificate sit tickets in chainsaw use, rigging, climbing, felling and aerial rescue. JC Tree Management was established here in 2009 and carries 10 million dollars of public liability insurance.

From Rose Bay we take work across the whole of Greater Sydney, residential and commercial. The Eastern Suburbs are where we know the trees best, and a good number of the mature figs and gums around here now stand within a few metres of a roofline, a pool or a set of service wires. That geography is what decides how a job gets done, long before anyone picks up a saw.

Sectional felling is the method we use most often, and the reason is space: on a lot of blocks around here there is simply nowhere to lay a tree down. So it comes apart from the top instead, piece by piece, each one roped and lowered under control onto whatever patch of ground is clear. Where a block will take a straight fell we do that, and where the only clear ground is on the other side of a roof or a pool we bring in a crane or work from an elevated platform and lift the sections out over the house. Clear felling is the option when a whole area has to come down at once, done in a controlled way with the least damage we can manage to what is left around it.

Plenty of trees do not need to come out at all. We deadwood, thin a crown, lift it clear of a roofline and take weight out of a limb that has grown heavy on one side, using current tree surgery technique so the tree seals over and carries on. Stump grinding and stump removal we do by machine, which keeps ground disturbance low and lets you replant the spot without regrowth pushing back through it, and a stump can be treated chemically where grinding is not the right answer. We plant as well, helping you pick a species that suits the position, and we will transplant an established tree where something has to move rather than go.

If you are not sure what you are looking at, arboricultural advice is a service in its own right here. Ask us the question before you commit to any work and you will get an answer from someone who has spent twenty years in trees, including the answer that the tree is fine and needs nothing done to it.

When a tree fails it causes major disruption and damage, which is why our emergency call-out service runs 24 hours a day for storm damaged and dangerous trees. Outside of that our hours are Monday to Saturday, 7am to 7pm, and one number covers the lot. Ring 0405 469 358 or email [email protected], and we will come out and look at the tree with you.
