Dave is second generation in this trade, which means the first tree he watched come down properly he watched as a kid. Twenty years of his own work later, Just Trees Australia is now one hundred per cent Aboriginally owned and running out of Wangaratta. That ownership is not a line at the bottom of the page for us. It is the reason the business talks about servicing a community, and the reason we would rather be known around here for turning up than for advertising.

The crew alongside Dave are certified arborists and certified climbers, and between them they cover all of north east Victoria: Wangaratta, Benalla, Beechworth, the King Valley, Myrtleford, Bright, Tallangatta and across the border to Albury Wodonga. Town blocks, farms, commercial sites, all of it. It is a big patch by the standards of a crew this size, and nothing on it is too big or too small. We run modern gear and we will happily come out for one stump.

The job that tells you most about what this crew can absorb happened during the bushfires. We worked alongside the Australian Army, taking out unsafe trees and clearing land so backburning could go ahead. That is not a domestic removal scaled up. It is work done in country that is already burning or about to, on a timetable somebody else sets, next to people whose job is the fire rather than the tree. It also shapes the ordinary work we do the rest of the year: bushfire preparation means getting into a property before summer and thinning and clearing the vegetation that would carry a fire to a house, which is a far cheaper conversation to have in October than in February.

Outside the fire season the work is tree removal where a tree has become genuinely unsafe, stump removal to finish the site off, and land clearing on blocks of any size, residential or commercial. When weather does the deciding, our storm damage and insurance work covers trees that have come down on a house, a shed or a car, and we deal with the claim side as part of it.
