A self drive cherry picker compact enough to fit under most verandas is how we reach the trees other crews have to walk away from. It belongs to Maddington Tree Service, a family business run out of Maddington by Shane and Wendy, and we have over 30 years of tree trimming and lopping behind us. Our patch runs through the southern suburbs of Perth and the streets around Armadale, Orange Grove, Canning Vale and Martin. Shane and Wendy have been looking after the same Orange Grove property for 13 years. The customer list runs from private homeowners and landowners through to developers and businesses large and small, and whichever of them you are, the crew arrives when we said it would and every cutting leaves with us.

Nothing comes off a tree before someone has looked at it properly. You get a no obligation inspection of the trees and shrubs on your property, a conversation about whatever is worrying you, and an honest recommendation aimed at the long term health and safety of the tree, which now and then amounts to less cutting than you had in mind. From there it is tree trimming and tree lopping to bring a canopy back off a roof, a driveway or a fence line, and tree felling where age, infestation or an unsound trunk has already settled the question. Palms get their dead fronds taken down before they fall on their own, and our high climbers go up the ones no machine can get near. Difficult access is the work we are best at.

Stump grinding is done with a machine built to travel over turf and garden beds without leaving a trace behind it, taking a stump well below the surface so the ground can be turfed, paved or planted out again. Everything that comes down that day goes through the chipper, which pulls solid logs up to 25 centimetres and crushes the larger branches through, and the mulch it makes is yours to keep if you want it on the garden. If you do not want it, it leaves with us along with every cutting and trimming on the block. We sell garden mulch as well, and some of it has gone out for nothing, including a load of bark chips dropped at the church property on Lewis Road in Martin.
