What is living in a tree decides how we work on it, and a hazard does not always mean a removal. On a recent job deadwooding and weight reducing large mature trees around a parkland with people walking underneath them, we found a hollow in a Marri with a young possum inside it. That hollow and the others we found were identified and left standing; we cut a section off the end of this one to take away the risk of it falling, and the possum was left alone to get on with living in it. Finding what is nesting in a tree, and working around it, is part of the job here.

Everything else follows from that. Our residential tree care runs from detailed secateur pruning through deadwooding, tree bracing and stump grinding to full tree removals, and we climb wherever the tree and the site allow it, which is what lets us work in confined spaces without bringing a machine in over the garden. On larger properties, rural tree services is the same skill across more ground, pruning, clearing and managing big trees spread over paddocks and bush. We work through Margaret River, Cowaramup, Gracetown, Augusta and the surrounding South West.

Five minutes towards the coast from the Margaret River townsite is the family farm, home to four generations of the Lane family, with permaculture, native bush, tree plantings and chalet accommodation on it. Pete Lane planted the main 14 hectare eucalypt plantation there in 1991, choosing a mix of species for diversity and resilience over the traditional monoculture blue gum. The cut stumps from the first thinning were never poisoned, because that protects the biology in the soil, so coppice shoots came back and the tree count went up. Growing them four metres apart pushed the growth upward, and thirty years on the plantation carries spotted gums, rose gums, stringybarks and swamp mahogany reaching forty metres.

Thinning that plantation is where our timber comes from, so every log sold improves the stand it came out of. We sell that firewood as a seasoned hardwood mix at $260 for one cubic metre, $420 for two, $600 for three and $800 for four, plus GST, with free delivery to Margaret River and Cowaramup, $20 to Witchcliffe and $60 to Karridale. Our woodchip is a super fine chip we produce through spring and the start of summer, and it is what you want around garden beds and young trees to hold the moisture in ahead of the dry. When they are available we supply bush poles for verandas, sheds and play areas in Red Stringybark, Southern Mahogany and Spotted Gum, the Spotted Gum rated BAL-29 for building in a bushfire zone, with pricing on request.
