Pruning one small backyard tree at one end of the scale, and taking 5,500 trees off a government road at the other. That is the range McMahon's Earthmoving & Tree Services is set up to cover, and covering it is a question of what is sitting in the yard as much as who is on the tools. Richard and Rachel McMahon started the business at Jindabyne in 2006. It is still family owned and it employs local families.

We work throughout the Cooma Monaro and Snowy Mountains area and will travel anywhere inside it for a job, whatever the size or the difficulty. Richard started the tree side and specialises in tree removal. Our crew are fully licensed, insured and accredited arborists with 25 years of experience across all aspects of tree work, with qualifications running from chainsaw tickets up to qualified arborist, and we are fully insured for every part of what we do including unlimited height tree removal.

Unlimited height is the phrase that earns its keep on high country jobs. It means our 25 metre fully certified tower goes up wherever there is ground solid enough to stand it on, and where there is not, the climbers go up instead. High climbing and remote access are listed as services in their own right for exactly that reason, because a good many trees up here are not standing anywhere convenient. Chainsaws, chippers, trucks and stump grinders travel with the crew, so the pruning, the felling, the stump grinding and the green waste are all dealt with in the one visit and the timber leaves when we do. We keep dangerous trees as a category of their own on the list, and the way we approach them is the line we apply to everything: if a project is worth doing, it is worth doing safely.

The other half of the business is the earth. Excavation and demolition run across domestic, commercial and industrial work, from a driveway or a landscaping job on a house block through to land clearing for new construction and contaminated site remediation, and our operators can get machinery into tight spaces without damaging what is around them. Where the two halves meet is block and site clearing. A development site can have its trees taken out, be stripped and be prepared for what comes next without you engaging a second contractor and then co ordinating the pair of us.
