Melbourne Arboricultural Services (MAS)

Melbourne Arboricultural Services (MAS) is a consulting-led arborist practice based in Brunswick, serving greater Melbourne. It is led by director Richard Warren-Smith, who studied arboriculture and applied science in horticulture at the University of Melbourne (Assoc. Dip. Arb, VCAH Burnley, Ba. App. Sc. Hort) and brings more than 25 years in the field. The focus is expert assessment and reporting as much as cutting, which suits owners, builders and councils who need trees properly documented before a decision is made.

Much of the work is written advice. MAS prepares arborist reports and tree reports, including council planning application reports and the paperwork behind tree removal permits and tree pruning and removal permits. For trees that raise concern, risk and health assessments set out the condition of a tree and any hazards, while property pre-purchase tree inspections tell buyers what they are taking on. Larger sites are covered by tree surveying and inventories, and disputes or subsidence issues by root management and damage claim reports.

Beyond one-off reports, MAS helps owners look after trees over the long term. Tree management plans map out care for individual trees or whole stands, tree protection guards established trees during building and development, and ongoing tree health assessments and tree inspections catch decline, disease or structural problems before they become dangerous.

When work on the tree itself is needed, the team carries out tree removal and tree and root removal, along with tree cutting, tree trimming and pruning to keep canopies safe and in shape. Timber and offcuts are put through tree mulching rather than sent to waste, so material from a job can be reused on site.
