Benalla is a town of big old street trees and blocks that were laid out when nobody was thinking about how a truck would get down the side. That is the ground North East Tree Services works, along with the farms, river flats and smaller towns spread through the rest of North East Victoria. Jason Stewart runs it, and the crew are qualified climbers, which is the part that decides what we can take on.

A climber changes the arithmetic of a job. A tree that cannot be dropped in one piece, because there is a roof under it or a fence or a set of powerlines, gets climbed and taken apart from the top down, with every section rigged and lowered to a spot we have chosen in advance. That covers tree removal on the tightest urban blocks and tree felling and clearing where there is room to work properly, and it is the same skill that lets us do the careful end of the work: weight reduction on a limb that has grown out too far, shaping, and pruning that is planned around what the tree will do next rather than how it looks today.

Two things we carry are worth naming because they change what is possible on a site. The stump grinder is remote controlled, so it goes into places an operator could not safely sit, works close to walls and structures, and keeps a person out of the way of the wheel. And where a tree is being kept through building or landscaping works, we install root protection barriers, which is the difference between a tree that survives a development and one that dies two summers after the builders leave. For work on or beside a road we handle the traffic management as well, so the job does not stall waiting for somebody else to turn up with signs.

The rest of the list runs to stump grinding and chipping, pest and disease identification and treatment, and tree planting and maintenance programs for owners and managers who want the trees on a property looked after on a schedule.
