A failed tree comes down one of two ways with us. If a crane can reach it, we use one. If it cannot, the job becomes technical rigging: anchor points taken off nearby trees and solid in ground anchors, then pulleys and props to bring the weight down under control. Emergency makesafe works is where that gear gets used hardest, on trees that have already failed or are about to, and as we say ourselves, no job is too easy or hard, small or large.

Shaun Rigoni started Rigoni Tree Solutions in 2013, the same year he finished his diploma of arboriculture. He grew up on a beef farm in north east Victoria, where his dad gave him the trees and his mum gave him the reason to keep them alive, then came down to Melbourne in 1998 and started climbing. Our arborists run from AQF level 3 through to level 8, with decades of experience between them.

The most useful thing we own may be the hydro excavation kit. When a tree is being blamed for a lifted path or a cracked slab, or a vehicle crossover is going in beside a street tree, guessing where the roots run is a decision you cannot take back. Our tree root investigation is non destructive: we wash the soil away with water to expose the roots across the area where excavation is proposed, without cutting a thing. What comes back to you is a report with the Tree Protection Zone measured, the roots located and their distribution mapped, and recommendations for managing that ground afterwards. It will also tell you whether structural roots have already been compromised, which is what decides whether the tree is still stable, and it will document the damage if you are claiming against whoever caused it.

We work the inner east and down along the bay. That takes in Hawthorn, Kew, Camberwell, Box Hill, Richmond, South Yarra, Malvern East and Caulfield North, the Melbourne CBD itself, and then Brighton, Elwood, Cheltenham and Mordialloc heading south, along with Melbourne and surrounds more broadly.

Tree removal and pruning runs from a light lift over a driveway through to taking a whole tree out of a courtyard. The preventive version is hazard tree reduction, which pulls the risk out of a tree that has started to fail without costing you the tree itself. Hedges and screening stay in shape under hedge trimming. Looking further ahead, tree selection and planting matches the species to the soil, the space and whatever is overhead, and possum guarding keeps a trunk from being used as the route into your roof. Where a permit puts a condition on working near a retained tree, qualified work observation puts one of our arborists on site while the other trades do their bit.
