The part of a tree removal that gets neglected is the stump. It is the arduous bit, and done badly it takes a toll on you and on the health of your soil. There are three ways to deal with one and only one of them we would put on a residential block, which is the sort of thing worth knowing before you agree to a price. So, the three ways. Stump extraction means excavating and ripping the stump out along with the root system under the soil, which we would not advise on a bigger tree, because the roots can run out well past the width of the canopy and hauling them out damages the soil and whatever is growing near it. Chemical treatment kills the stump and the roots and stops the regrowth, but it can do permanent damage to the plant life around it and throw the mineral balance of your soil out, so it is not what we would choose in a garden. Stump grinding is the safest bet. Our machine runs a metal blade fitted with tungsten teeth, takes the stump down to ground level or below, and cuts the roots off from the stump so it stops shooting. The roots stay in the ground, which is precisely what keeps your property undamaged.

On a tree removal we start by identifying any deterioration or damage caused by storms and severe weather and telling you what we think the right course of action is. Then, with your approval, our climber dismantles the tree in sections with the crew working below, which is how a large tree comes out of a tight backyard with the fence and the roof still standing. Green waste is cleared and a final sweep goes over the site before we leave. Tree pruning is climber work as well, at any height, and comes with advice on whether the tree wants thinning, topping, raising or reduction. Two words that get used interchangeably elsewhere, trimming and lopping, we keep separate: trimming is for appearance or for taking out dead and damaged growth, lopping is for the practical reasons, clearing a view, letting light into the house, keeping a limb off something it should not be touching. We trim around power lines to keep the electrical hazard out of it, and the tree and its position get assessed before any of it is decided.

Vegetation control is where the decade of council work shows. We carry mowers and slashers for anything from a road shoulder to a large open area, and we own our excavator and bobcat outright, so slashing and land clearing for developers and house block owners can be under way at a moment's notice. The site is cleared of green waste before it is handed back. Mulching is the horticulturalist's end of it, a layer over your existing soil to hold moisture, keep weed growth down and improve fertility, chosen for the garden it is going onto.
