Working out where a tree's roots actually run used to mean digging and hoping. We use ground penetrating radar, which maps the root zone without a spade going anywhere near it, and on a development site that is the difference between a tree that survives the build and one that quietly dies two summers after handover. That work sits under AS 4970:2025, the standard covering protection of trees on development sites, and it is the sort of job we set Roots 2 Leaves Tree Services up to handle.

It began as a hands-on tree service in East Gippsland and has grown into a vegetation management and environmental business working across Gippsland and regional Victoria. From Swan Reach we take on sites ranging from coastal environments and wetlands through to alpine and rural landscapes. The client list is a fair test of any crew: the East Gippsland, Wellington and Latrobe shire councils, Parks Victoria, DEECA, schools and public spaces, commercial organisations and residential blocks.

Every removal starts with an onsite assessment, because the access decides the method. Tight gates, difficult terrain, a backyard reached only by a side path, structures and power lines close in: those are what determine whether a job needs specialised rigging, an excavator, a skid steer, an Avant loader, tower access or a qualified climber. Then comes the part we would sooner be judged on. We mulch the branches, cut the timber into firewood, grind the stump out, rake, leaf blow and clear the sawdust off your roof and shed, and the aim on every site is to leave it cleaner than we found it. Alongside tree removal we take on land clearing, palm management from de-fronding and seed removal through to full removal, and invasive species removal for ivy and environmental weeds.

For the trees that stay, we do the tree pruning to AS 4373:2025, fit bracing and support systems where a structure needs holding, and carry out soil improvement and tree health work including Elm Leaf Beetle treatment. On the environmental side there is native planting and revegetation, wetland restoration, and habitat creation with specialised hollowing equipment, including Hollow Hog internal cavities cut into living trees, timber nest boxes and recycled plastic habitat boxes. Where a landscape has been degraded, vegetation rehabilitation brings in weed management, long-rooting species, erosion control and site stabilisation.

The consulting side covers arborist reports, tree risk assessments, hazard assessments, vegetation inspections for schools and public spaces, and environmental reporting for planning and compliance. Our arborists hold AQF Level 5 Diplomas of Arboriculture and AQF Level 3 certification, with Advanced Tree Felling qualified operators on the crew, and we are members of the International Society of Arboriculture, hold the ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification and belong to Arboriculture Australia.
