Ben Lawrence has worked on trees across Europe, New Zealand and Australia, and his work in Sweden was picked up by the media over there. Twenty years of that experience came back with him to Aldinga Beach, where he owns and runs South Coast Tree Services as a fully qualified and insured arborist, and where he personally manages every job that goes out the door.

If a tree has grown straight across the view you bought the place for, we can open that view back up without taking the tree out. Vista pruning does precisely that, and it sits alongside directional and formative pruning, which shapes a young tree so it grows structurally sound, or corrects one that has already gone the wrong way. Shape is vital to a tree's survival, and cutting the wrong sections out of one that has passed its height limit does real harm, hindering its growth or leaving it overbalanced, which is why crown reduction and pollarding is selective cutting rather than a haircut.

Dead wooding is done for the stability of the tree and for safety. Branches die off for a number of reasons, among them light deficiency, pest and disease damage and damage to the root structure, and a dead branch will at some point decay back to the parent stem and fall off on its own schedule. The process speeds up the tree's natural abscission, sheds unwanted weight and wind resistance, and helps its overall balance. Crown and canopy thinning works on the same principle, selective removal through the canopy that increases the light coming down and cuts the wind resistance.

Removal of trees and palms is sometimes the only option, when a tree has become a danger or is simply in the wrong place. We can take one out in a very tight space, because we carry lowering ropes and the equipment to bring pieces down without damage to property, gardens or fences. Some trees are protected and we will let you know if yours is one of them. Where that happens, we speak to the council about removal, and if the council refuses it, minimal pruning of up to 30% is what normally gets approved.
