Thirty five years is a long run in land management, and it has left Summit Open Space Services with seven depots and work across four states and territories. The Riverina arm operates out of East Wagga Wagga, and the team running it lives and works in the Wagga Wagga and Griffith area, which is the part that matters when you want somebody who knows the block before they see it.

The other depots sit at St Marys in Sydney, Bulli near Wollongong, Beresfield outside Newcastle, Wyong on the Central Coast, Boronia in Victoria and Baringa in Queensland. Between them they give us metropolitan and regional coverage across New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory. Arboriculture, as we would define it, is the art and science of cultivating, managing and preserving individual woody plants and trees within permanent landscape and amenity settings: gardens, parks, campuses and urban areas. Our qualified arborists produce tree reports, tree assessments and health and structure reports, using diagnostic technique to establish what condition a tree is actually in and what the realistic options are. Those documents earn their keep when a tree stands near a building, a footpath or a boundary and somebody has to make a call that will be looked at again later.

On tree removal and maintenance we would sooner be straight about cost, since it is the first thing anyone asks. A removal can run anywhere from about $500 to $7,000 and beyond, and four things decide where in that spread yours lands. Size, because a large established tree needs more people and bigger machinery. Species, because a hardwood takes longer to cut down and chip than a softer timber. Health, because rot, disease and infestation make a tree dangerous to climb and can mean bringing in a cherry picker. And access, because a house, a pool, powerlines, other large trees or a sloping block all change the method before they change the price.
