When a tree needs assessing for bushfire risk, it helps if the person doing it has stood in front of a fire. Tasmanian Arbor Care is run by Alex Travers, who has eleven years in tree work and a background in emergency management, and still leads a crew for the Tasmanian Fire Service and the SES. We are based at Cranbrook on the East Coast of Tasmania, and Alex is also a co-owner of Craigie Knowe, the oldest vineyard on the coast, so this is a business with its feet in the local ground.

Bushfire risk assessments are a real speciality here, and for good reason given where we work and who is doing the looking. We walk your property, work out which trees and what growth are the problem, and tell you what needs to come out or come back to make the place defendable.

Felling, removal and stump grinding is the bulk of the heavy work. We fell and safely remove trees, take out dangerous limbs and deadwood, and grind the stump out afterwards so nothing is left to trip over or mow around. We work with experienced climbers and run an elevated work platform for the jobs that are up high or awkward to reach.

Pruning and general tree maintenance are done to the Australian Standard, AS4373-2007, and Arboriculture Australia's Minimum Industry Standards, which is worth knowing because plenty of tree work is not. We prune for the health and the structure of the tree, not just to tidy its outline. Tree health assessments pick up trouble before it becomes a hazard, and we treat the specific problems the East Coast throws up, including elm leaf beetle through an integrated pest management approach that leans on biological control as much as chemical, and bracket fungus in eucalypts.

The other jobs round it out. Habitat creation for native wildlife, done in line with the same standards, hedge trimming, block clearing, mulching and chipping that turns the green waste into something useful, and some landscaping. If a tree comes down in a storm or something turns dangerous, we take emergency call-outs. We are fully insured with public liability cover.
