The Tree Surgeon works out of Orange and has been at it for more than twenty years, with membership of the Tree Contractors Association of Australia going back to 2000. Bruce, the director, holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Horticulture and a Diploma in Arboriculture, which puts the business at Level 5 consultancy capability, and every employee is a certified arborist. The site sums up the outlook simply: trees are an asset to a garden, and they need maintenance and love.

The everyday work is tree removal, tree pruning and corrective pruning, the last being the job of steering a tree that has been badly cut or has grown into trouble back towards a sound structure. Stump grinding follows a removal, hedge trimming and hedge cutting keep screens tidy, and wood chipping processes the waste on site. Wood chip is supplied and delivered if you want it. The crew makes a point of cleaning up thoroughly and the site claims a property is left cleaner than they found it.

Storm damage is on the service list, as is mistletoe removal, which is not something most tree firms bother to name and is a real problem in the Central West where it can pull a eucalypt apart over a few seasons. The consultancy side is where the qualifications earn their keep: tree consultations, written tree reports, and help preparing council tree removal applications for owners who need approval before anything comes down.

The insurance is heavier than most: 20 million dollars public liability, workers compensation and professional indemnity, the last of which matters if you are relying on a written report.
