A widowmaker is a limb that has broken away from the tree but is still sitting up in the branches underneath, held there by very little. Knowing when a tree has to go is the hard part, and it is worth a proper look before you decide. Large sections of bark dropping off a branch point to dead wood, and a branch showing no new growth through spring is finished. Where roots are working into a foundation, a sewer line or a septic tank, cutting them back can buy you time, though there is a point where removal becomes the only answer. We will look at it and tell you which of those you are dealing with, and we offer soil analysis as well, so if the tree needs feeding you know exactly what to put on it.

Timing counts for a lot. Book pruning before spring and the dead, diseased and dangerous wood comes off before the tree starts its growth cycle, which cuts the risk of disease and pests getting in behind late cuts. Late winter and early spring are also the window for planting, giving a new tree a full season to establish itself.
