A good log does not have to leave your place as woodchip. Milling is part of what I do at Tony Wootton Tree Surgeon, so a tree that has come to the end of its life on your block can be converted into usable timber. Whatever is not worth milling goes through the mulching and stays on the property for your garden beds to make use of.

I have been working trees up here since 1996. I am a fully qualified Level 5 arborist holding a Diploma of Applied Science in Arboriculture, with better than twenty years in the field, a member of the Queensland Arboricultural Association, and fully insured. The base is at Witta, a few minutes up the road from Maleny.

Before a saw comes out, I will walk the block with you for a tree and property assessment, looking at the health and structure of what is growing there and what it is likely to do over the next few years. That reading is species by species. The endemic red cedars, Toona ciliata, and the white cedars, Melia azedarach, that turn the plateau over each winter behave nothing like one another, and the soils and the seasons up here have their own say in it. Sometimes the advice is to do the work. Sometimes it is to leave the tree alone and watch it for a season.

The ongoing side of the job is tree, shrub and hedge pruning and detailing: shaping, thinning and cleaning up plantings so they stay healthy and hold a decent form. On a hedge or on a specimen tree that is detail work, done cut by cut, and it is the kind of job where the difference between a good result and a poor one only shows up two seasons later.

Some trees cannot safely be kept, or have simply reached the end of their run, and that is where tree removal comes in. On the steep and broken ground through the hinterland that takes planning and control, and it is where the training and the years on the tools earn their keep.
