A trunk greater than 300mm, measured at 1.4 metres above ground level, is the line that decides whether you need a permit to take a tree out in Orange. Tree protection measures apply to all private and public land inside the Orange City Council area, so that measurement is where any quote around here has to start. There are exceptions, and they are worth knowing about. Radiata pine, fruit trees in the Malus, Prunus and Pyrus genera, and certain poplars and willows are all exempt from the permit in Orange. Inside a heritage conservation area the path changes again, with the work going through a development application rather than a straight tree permit. Blayney Shire Council requires approval before you remove or significantly trim any tree in a heritage conservation area, and Cabonne Shire Council takes the same position, with consent needed for the removal of any tree inside one. Whichever shire you are in, a tree on the verge or the nature strip is council business regardless of who lives out the front.
