Tree Range Arborists

This business started at a small family kitchen table, in the witching hours of our second child's first fortnight. Tree Range Arborists is family run, and it was built to give a young family more flexibility and to offer a service the arboriculture industry was not delivering at the time. It got referred on enough that demand pushed it out into multiple crews, and there is now an office in the heart of Emerald, a fleet, and more than 15 years of arborist experience behind the work.

Our roots are set deep in the challenging but beautiful conditions of the Dandenong Ranges, where some of the world's tallest and largest trees grow, and that is where a crew becomes technical climbing arborists. From Emerald the work runs across the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Ranges and out through Melbourne's east, taking in Belgrave, Monbulk, Sassafras, Kallista, Gembrook, Mount Dandenong, Mount Evelyn, Warburton, Yarra Junction, Warrandyte, Boronia, Ferntree Gully, Knox, Glen Waverley, Ringwood, Lilydale, Dandenong, Berwick, Pakenham and Cardinia.

Something worth settling before you ring anybody is what actually decides the price. On a fixed quotation we look at four things: the hours or days the task needs, the size of the crew and the speciality and experience level of the staff on it, the machinery required, and whether a subcontractor such as a crane company has to be brought in. Hourly rates suit some jobs better, large tree pruning, multiple tree pruning, or a habitat tree removal. The other half of the answer is less comfortable. Arboriculture is not a regulated industry in Australia, so it is left to each business owner to decide whether to carry WorkCover, public liability, indemnity, motor vehicle and plant insurance, to keep servicing the machinery, and to pay qualified staff fairly. That is most of why the same job comes back at wildly different prices, and it is why a suspiciously cheap quote is worth a second look before you accept it.

Tree removal and assessment is the main job here, with tree pruning and restoration for trees that were cut badly in the past or knocked about by weather. Behind those come stump removal and stump grinding, and tree bracing and cabling where a limb union needs support rather than a saw. When the weather does the deciding, emergency tree works and makesafe is what we run: damaged trees assessed, unstable ones taken out, and the broken timber and debris cleared away afterwards.

The environmental side is not decoration. Timber off our jobs gets recycled, and there is a selection of salvaged wood for sale on display in the Emerald office, so trees out of these ranges can go on living in somebody's house. Where a client would rather keep something, we create habitat, and habitat and vegetation management, site clearances, arborist reports and mulch delivery are all services in their own right. We work for residential, commercial and government clients, including education facilities, councils, state departments and disaster recovery, and we are members of the Victorian Tree Industry Organisation and Arboriculture Australia.
