Felling is generally the last resort, once spraying, pruning or lopping has failed or was never going to work in the first place. Sometimes the whole tree doesn't need to go, and tree lopping can save one that's only been part damaged, by a lightning strike or by a few branches causing trouble, though not every species responds well and recovery comes down to the age and health of the tree. Once a tree is down, stump grinding mills the remainder into chips you can keep as mulch or firewood, depending on the size and species.
