Treewatch

Not everything we do to a tree at Treewatch involves taking it away. With cable bracing we hold a weak union together, which is a very effective way to keep that gorgeous specimen tree standing. Root barriers go into the ground to stop roots reaching plumbing, foundations, pavers, driveways or garden plants, and we fit polycarbonate possum guards that stop possums climbing the trunk. Where there are elms on the block, our elm maintenance protects them from defoliation by the elm leaf beetle. Every one of those buys a tree more years, and none of them is a job for someone whose only tool is a saw.

We opened in 1997 and have been at it ever since, working out of Lorne on the Great Ocean Road. Our consulting arborists hold qualifications up to the Level 5 Diploma of Arboriculture, we are accredited by the Victorian College of Agriculture and Horticulture, and our arborist is a member of the National Arborist Association of Australia and America. We are approved contractors for several large Government agencies, with thousands of private clients behind that as well. The Great Ocean Road is home ground, from Torquay and Anglesea through Aireys Inlet, Wye River and Apollo Bay out to Port Campbell and Warrnambool, and from there we work Geelong and the Bellarine, Melbourne and its suburbs, the Mornington Peninsula, the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges, the Goldfields, Gippsland, the High Country, the Murray, the Macedon Ranges and the Grampians.

There is a desk side to the business as well. We carry out tree assessments at both large and small scale, and we write the documents a planner or a council will ask for by name: preliminary arboricultural reports, arboricultural appraisals, development impact appraisal reports, risk assessment reports, vegetation assessments, exploratory root reports and final certifications. An exploratory root report is the one that settles where a tree's roots actually run before a slab, a trench or a driveway goes in over the top of them, and a final certification is what closes the file once the build is finished.

On the ground we take on emergency tree removals and confined space tree removals, the ones with nowhere to drop a trunk where every piece has to be rigged out over something. Crown reduction, limb lopping and weight reduction pull load off a tree that has gone top heavy, dead wooding and hanger removal clear what is already broken and waiting to come down, and we do line clearing and clearance pruning around powered spans. Where a job spills out onto a road we handle our own traffic management, from preparing the plan and the signage through to controlling the site on the day, so you are not chasing a second contractor to make that part happen.

What comes off a job does not go to waste either. Our mulching service recycles your trees by returning them to the soil as mulch, which is a tidier end to the day for everyone.
