Leon Whitehead's first business was a lawn mowing and weed control round he ran on his own in 1976, trading as Leon's Lawn Service. It became SA Weed Control in 1988, SA Parks and Gardens in 1996, UrbanVirons Group in 2004, and Urbans in 2020. There are more than 140 of us now, working from a head office at Kilburn with depots at Lonsdale and Mount Barker, and we have been looking after outdoor spaces across Adelaide and South Australia for over 40 years.

There is more than one way to get a tree out, and the method we bring depends entirely on what is around it. Our qualified and experienced climbers dismantle trees by hand on rope and harness where that is the sensible option. Close to power lines or buildings, the elevated work platforms come in instead, truck mounted or tracked depending on what the ground will take. For the big timber we have cranes from three tonnes right through to 100 tonnes, plus crane trucks to move the logs once they are on the deck. Where there is open space and clearance from any obstacles, straight clear felling is the quicker job and we will tell you so.

Tree pruning is the crown work: crown reduction and shaping, crown thinning, crown lifting and raising, and dead wooding to take out branches that are overgrown, unhealthy or already dead. Stumps go with purpose-built grinders matched to the size and type of what has been left behind, and stump poisoning is there for the ones where grinding is not the answer. Land clearing runs from a single block for a new build up through large acreage for a developer, industrial sites and new road construction.

Our arborist reports and tree inspections give you a detailed analysis of a tree, whether it is healthy, stressed or on its way to becoming dangerous, and our arborists know the local council tree regulations that decide what you are actually allowed to do with it. When a storm has been through and something is down or hanging, emergency works run 24/7.

Trees are one division of several. The same business covers civil works, environmental services, horticulture, landscape construction, sports turf and open spaces, and weed and pest control, for state and local government, commercial grounds and facilities, community, aged care and residential housing, and civil construction clients.
