Wade Ryan Tree Consultant is a consulting arboricultural practice based at Springvale, on the edge of Wagga Wagga. Wade Ryan is an AQF Level 5 Arborist with 25 years in horticulture and arboriculture behind him, a Bachelor of Applied Science in Environmental Horticulture, and an Advanced Diploma in OH&S. He is a member of the International Society of Arboriculture and an associate member of the Institute of Australian Consulting Arboriculturists. This is the end of the trade that writes the report rather than runs the chainsaw.

Most of the work is tree inspection and reporting. Arborist reports and development reports are prepared for councils and consent authorities, usually where trees sit on or near a site that someone wants to build on. That runs into tree and asset protection measures and vegetation assessments: the specifications that decide which trees stay, what root zone gets fenced off, and how a construction project works around them.

Risk assessment is a specialty. Wade Ryan is an advanced user of Quantified Tree Risk Assessment, the QTRA system, which puts a number on the likelihood of a failure and the consequence of it rather than leaving the call to opinion. Defect evaluation goes with it. Where a tree is worth keeping but structurally compromised, support and bracing systems are an alternative to taking it out. Property and school inspections are a regular part of the work, along with caravan parks and other sites carrying public risk.

The other side of the practice is tree health. Pest and disease diagnosis covers working out what is affecting a tree and what can be done about it. Pruning specifications are written for aged, veteran and heritage trees, where the wrong cut is not recoverable. Tree selection and species evaluation answers the question before planting: what will actually cope with the climate and the site it is going into.
