Why Arb

People rarely ring an arborist about a tree in the abstract. It is the light that stopped reaching the back windows, the limb hanging over a play area, or the view that disappeared behind a row of gums. Understanding your why is where we start, and it is where the name Why Arb came from. Pruning for safety, opening up light and views, or taking a tree out altogether, every decision on your property begins with what you actually want from it.

Rory Burdett Hammonds founded the business in Hobart and brought more than 18 years as an arborist with him. Why Arb has been working across the city since 2024, and in that time Rory has built a team of qualified arborists whose training is kept current, fully insured, with an emphasis on getting a job done right the first time. From a small garden prune to a large, high risk removal, we take the time to understand a site before anyone starts cutting.

The tree work runs from tree pruning and tree reduction through tree thinning to safe tree removals, with stump grinding to finish off what is left in the ground and hedge and tree combinations where a boundary needs both dealt with at once. We also take on grounds maintenance, so one crew can keep a property in order rather than handing it back and forth between a tree service and a gardener. From Sandy Bay we get to most of the city and a good way up the Derwent: Battery Point, South Hobart, West Hobart, North Hobart, Lenah Valley, Mount Nelson, Fern Tree and the Hobart CBD, then Glenorchy, Moonah, Claremont and Berriedale, and over the water to Bellerive, Cambridge, Geilston Bay and Acton Park.

What leaves your garden matters to us as much as what we cut. Where it is feasible the material we take down is recycled to keep it out of landfill, and we work to sustainable methods on site so the environmental cost of the job stays low. Rory is a strong advocate for safety, and he keeps the tools and machinery current, which is what lets a high risk removal be done with speed and accuracy and without drama on the day.
