Tree pruning cost and prices in Australia

Most Australians pay $250 to $1,000 to have one tree pruned. Go Tree Quotes puts the national average at $625, on quote data running from $325 for a small palm tidy-up to $1,450 for a very large tree. Hedges and palms are priced on a different basis again, and both are cheaper than people expect.

The thing that catches people out is not the number. It is the word on the quote. "Pruning" and "trimming" mean the same thing to an Australian tree crew and cost the same. "Lopping" does not, and in Victoria's residential zones it can now be the difference between work you can book tomorrow and work that needs a planning permit first.

How much does tree pruning cost?

Pruning is quoted per tree, not per hour. What drives the number up is height, because height is time in the tree and time is the whole cost. A branch an arborist can reach with a pole saw from the lawn is cheap. The same branch fifteen metres up, reached on ropes and lowered past a pergola, is not.

Treat them as the middle of the market rather than a ceiling: a tree over a pool, over a neighbour's colorbond roof, or anywhere near a powerline will quote above its size band, and the calculator further down applies those loadings for you.

What are tree trimming prices and tree lopping prices?

Search "tree trimming prices" and "tree pruning prices" and you will get the same numbers, because they are the same job. Nobody in the trade charges differently for which word you used.

Lopping is genuinely different. It means cutting limbs off at convenient points rather than at the tree's natural growing points. It is faster, so it can quote lower, and it leaves wounds that never seal and weak regrowth you will pay someone to deal with in about five years.

Planning rules treat it as a separate act, which is the part almost no cost guide mentions. Whitehorse City Council in Melbourne's east exempts pruning a protected tree for regeneration or ornamental shaping from needing a permit, but requires one to lop it. Its definition of lopping is precise: cutting branches or stems between branch unions or internodes. In other words, exactly the cut a cheap quote is offering you.

Victoria then raised the stakes statewide. On 15 September 2025, Amendment VC289 introduced clause 52.37 to every Victorian planning scheme, requiring a planning permit to remove, destroy or lop a canopy tree in specified circumstances. A canopy tree is defined there as one more than 5 metres tall, with a trunk circumference over 0.5 metres measured 1.4 metres above the ground, and a canopy at least 4 metres across. It applies across the residential zones apart from Low Density Residential. Even a fast-tracked VicSmart application is meant to take 10 business days, which is a fortnight you had not planned for.

So a "lopping" quote can be the dearest option on your kitchen table. If a crew offers it by name, ask for reduction pruning instead. Our tree lopping page sets out what to ask for.

How much does hedge trimming cost?

Hedges are not priced per plant. They are priced on the face being cut, which is height multiplied by length. Go Tree Quotes gives a national average of $540 and a spread of $95 to $1,320.

Notice the jump between 3m and 5m. Below about three metres a gardener works off the ground with a long-reach trimmer. Above it, someone is on a platform, the offcuts have further to fall, and the price roughly doubles for the same length of hedge. How much does palm tree trimming cost?

Palms are the cheapest thing on this page. Go Tree Quotes averages palm trimming at $155 for a single tree, and about $560 for a large date palm.

The date palm row is not a mistake. Its fronds carry spines long enough to go through a boot, the frond bases have to be cut rather than pulled, and the weight coming down is in a different class from a golden cane. Does a council permit add to the price?

It can, and it is the line nobody budgets for. There is no national rule about pruning your own tree. Your state sets the framework and your council sets the numbers, so the only reliable answer to "how much can I take off?" is the one on your own council's exempt tree works page, whichever council that is.

A worked example of how far apart the numbers get:

• NSW. In the state's complying development rules, a protected tree is defined as one that needs a separate permit or development consent for pruning or removal. Councils then publish their own exemptions. Central Coast Council allows pruning of up to 10% of a tree's foliage area once every growing season, on branches no more than 50mm in diameter, in accordance with AS 4373-2007.
• Victoria. Bayside City Council says a local law permit is likely not required to prune less than 10 per cent of a tree's canopy, provided a qualified arborist does the work to AS 4373-2007, you hold before and after photographs, the arborist certifies the work complied with the standard, and the tree is not on the Significant Tree Register. That certification is a real cost line, and it is why the cheapest crew is sometimes the one who cannot help you.
• South Australia. PlanSA treats it as a test rather than a form. You do not need development approval for pruning that is not likely to affect a tree's health or appearance, but you do where the pruning removes more than 30 percent of the tree crown, or occurs more than once within a 5-year period.
• Queensland. Brisbane City Council is blunt about the risk: it is an offence to interfere with vegetation protected under the Natural Assets Local Law without permission, even if the vegetation is on your property, and penalties range from infringement notices to prosecution.

One number does run through several of those rules: AS 4373-2007, Pruning of amenity trees. It is the Australian standard that names the cuts and specifies how they are made, and councils lean on it because it lets them describe acceptable work without writing a botany textbook into a local law. A quote that names the cut in the standard's language is a quote you can hold someone to.

Before you accept any quote, read your own council's exempt tree works list and check what it allows without an application. Five minutes there is the cheapest part of the job. If the council does want supporting evidence, that usually means an arborist report, which is a separate cost again.

Why does pruning near powerlines cost more?

Because the pool of people allowed to do it is small. Ausgrid states that any tree trimming performed within three metres of its powerlines must only be done by workers accredited under the SafeWork Code of Practice for Work Near Overhead Powerlines. Accredited crews are fewer, they are booked further out, and they price accordingly.

The split of responsibility surprises people too. Ausgrid handles vegetation around network assets that are not on private property. Property owners are responsible for keeping private overhead powerlines free of vegetation, which is the service wire running from the street to your house. Leave it and there is a sting: Ausgrid says it may issue a defect notice, arrange the work itself, and charge the landowner for the cost under the Electricity Supply Act 1995 (NSW). That is the most expensive way to buy a prune.

There is one upside. Councils tend to make this work exempt rather than harder. Central Coast Council exempts pruning branches within 3 metres of powerlines by a licensed contractor, or within 1 metre of telecommunication wires, so you are usually paying for the accreditation, not for paperwork on top.

How to compare three tree pruning quotes

Pruning quotes are hard to compare because two crews can describe completely different work in the same six words. Make each one put the following in writing and the comparison does itself.

• Which cut, by name. Crown lift, crown thinning, reduction pruning or deadwooding, and roughly how much comes off. "Tidy up the tree" is not a scope.
• A reference to AS 4373-2007. If the quote names the standard, the crew has told you which rulebook they are working to.
• Green waste. Chipped and taken away, or left stacked on your lawn? This is the single most common gap between a cheap quote and a dear one.
• Who lodges the permit. If your council needs one, ask whether they lodge it, whether they charge for it, and whose name is on the application.
• Written certification, if your exemption needs it. Bayside's 10 per cent exemption only holds if a qualified arborist certifies the work met the standard. Ask whether that certificate is included or extra.
• A current certificate of currency for public liability. Ask to see the document, not to be told it exists. Check the expiry date.
• How they are getting up there. A climb and a hired elevated work platform are very different costs, and the quote should say which one you are buying.

Then get three. Same wording, same scope, same week. Prices for identical pruning work sit hundreds of dollars apart in every Australian city, and the only way to see that is to ask the same question three times.

Is the cheapest tree trimming quote worth it?

Sometimes. A quiet week in winter, a crew already working two doors down, a small job squeezed in before lunch: those are real reasons a price comes in low, and you should take them. What is not a real reason is a quote that is cheap because the work is smaller than the work you need, and the usual suspects are green waste left behind, lopping cuts sold as pruning, and no insurance certificate.

The asymmetry matters here. A bad tree removal leaves you with a stump. A bad prune leaves you with a living tree that is now weaker, uglier and more likely to shed a limb, and the next crew has to charge you to fix it before they can do anything useful. Pruning is the job where the cheapest quote most often becomes the dearest one.
